ALUU 4: My voice shall be heard on this- Former Vice-President (Africa) of World Bank

Oby Ezekwesili, a former Vice-President (Africa) of the World Bank who retired a few months ago, has expressed devastation at the killing of students in Mubi and Port Harcourt in the past week.
Read fer press statement below:

I am shaken; I am outraged, I am devastated, I feel mortally wounded. The situations in Mubi and Port Harcourt were terrible. Did you see the video-recording of how students were killed in Port Harcourt? Is this not the same country where it is emotionally difficult when you see a corpse on the street?

I am sorry; I am totally outraged like any decent citizen of a nation that we love. The killings were barbaric, mere savagery and very devastating. Some people are acting or behaving as if there are no people in charge of the government. "Something is fundamentally wrong with our society: To see the dastardly mob killing of four misguided youths(Port Harcourt's) who stole sank my optimism. Noo! Even in death, these four must get justice. My voice shall be heard on this. What have we become? Please click to continue.
"We used to be better than this. What has psychologically traumatized our people? There is a fundamental problem; there is a breakdown in something that is proudly Nigeria. I cannot believe that our society has got to this level. We are broken, we need to be mended and nobody will mend it other than ourselves

We are getting to the precipice and we need to pull ourselves back. The government has to take full responsibility; it has to be in charge to prevent anarchy. The only way out is for the government to prove that it is really in charge.
We are a nation of 150million people; we are not a small country. If the situation continues like this, we cannot survive a large-scale conflict. It does not do us good to befell into a nation of conflagration.

We have to watch it. A lot of countries that have had genocidal experience started like this.
We have too many problems to descend into a state of anarchy again. How can we all sit and watch impunity.

  1. The thing that has psychologically traumatise our people like u ask is the total failure of you & your cohorts @ the helm of affairs in this nation. If people have faith in the judicial & security system this wudnt have happened. If you guyz have created an enabling environment for d citizenry poverty wouldn't ve taken away peoples conscience replacing it wif somefin below that of an animal. Goverment is the problem & until that is fix we will only kip ranting without result to show for it. But then justice must be done.

*clapping for u while standing* These people created this environment. This has been going on in Nigeria for a very very long time. Nigerians are broken, Nigerians are angry, Nigerians have taken laws into their hands. Madam u created the situation. You and those in ur govt. Pls quit with the "surprised" anger. We demand justice. Where was the police in the whole saga??? Fire them all. I have seen pictures of the police brutalising people, asking them to do frog jump;beating them with batons. What did u do then?? Justice for all

  6. While everyone blames the people of Aluu, the origin of this societal decay could be traced back to Govt. What if the Police has been active, would vigilantes be required? This woman should put a sock in it and direct her anger to the govt, which she is a part of

  7. Heard it all before! Same ol bullshit, different roll of toilet paper! I feel her pain 'cos I know she's a mother, so the video must have struck a nerve in her. Nonetheless, it's all water on stone because as tough as she may seem, she can't fight this menace on her own.

The death of these 4 young chaps came down to one thing - Nigeria is a failed failed failed state! And Oby Ezekwesili cannot salvage this monstrosity on her own. The men in the government will suppress her and her voice 'cos that's all they're used to - shutting women off!

Oby Ezekwesili tried in her ability bt water pass gari. Ppl like Atiku,IBB,OBJ,Danjuma will never come out 2condemn the Mubi and Aluu killings naw, they r the actual reason Nigeria is d way it s 2day. 13. My view on the Killings of uniport students.

I've been saying this but nobody seems to be seeing things from this point of view. UNIPORT should be held accountable for the loss of the lives for the following reasons.

    1. The deplorable state of the hostels is what has driven students to stay in the village. I know this because i was once that hell-hole. The toilets are a chlamydia lab, the bathroom is a no-go area. We had our bath in the quadrangle outside and even pooped in nylon bags and shot-put over the fence. We cooked on the pavement beside our room becos you cant go near the kitchen. There was always power cuts as well. Even i told myself that no matter what it took, even if it meant aristo, i would move to the village once i got a chance. Thankfully, that chance didnt come as my mum thoughtfully removed me from the school after a few months.

    2. Students have been raped and robbed in their thousands in the village. I was robbed at shiny machete point myself! This alone should have been a huge incentive for the school to make the campus more habitable for students so they wont have to endanger their lives. At the very least, if the story we are hearing that the Aluu 4 went to aluu to collect money....if the student was in the hostel, they wouldnt have needed to go into that hell and be killed. Uniport knows aluu has been suffering from armed robberies in recent past, did they issue a warning to students to avoid this village??

    3. How long would uniport take to eradicate cultism from that school?? Uniport is very dangerous in this area. Cultists run amok!! Look at the issue of gangs here in london, it has drastically reduced. Most of those who partook in the riots last year have been jailed or reprimanded by the justice system. Why cant uniport take this cultism seriously once and for all?? what would it take?? You dont hear about cult in unilag and their activities in the south west are very mild.

UNIPORT you have blood on your hands of all the students that have been raped and killed in the name of education in that backward zoo. Pls no well-meaning parent should put their child in that school till they sort themselves out.

Tell Okonjo Iweala that. This woman tried but wasn't in government long enough to effect change. She keeps saying no when asked to come back. too sensible.

  18. The comments insulting Mrs. Ezekwesili are unfortunate. This woman is one of the shinning lights of our time. I wonder if those insulting the former VP of the World Bank even know anything about her at all. When she was in government she was known as "madam due process". She had such a high level of integrity and this showed through in all her dealings. It's truly regrettable that our youths are so ill-informed in this country. BTW, she is no longer in government.

Those of you complaining about government and insulting Mrs Ezekwesili, a number of you are not even in Nigeria, so it seems quite easy for you to harangue those with good intentions and shut them down. What have you contributed to the development of this country in your own little way. How have you positively represented the Nigerian image? Ask yourself before you shut down one of the few who have done this nation proud.

Madam, I quite agree with your stance on this issue and will support any legitimate move in support of justice for the Aluu 4.

  19. it is very very easy to blame the govt for the rot but the pertinent question is are we the only ones going through such sufferings? why are other african countries who are in worse situation not burning thieves like we do

the gleaming rich china beamed out to foreign media is that of trillionaires but there are chinese people living and eating what the poorest nigerian will not even touch doesn't mean they go out lynching and burning thieves... even the countries associated with regressive and barbaric acts still have a system of law and order they follow before cutting off body parts

in a university town,i refuse to accept that there were no sizeable number of fellow students who were witnesses to what happened why didn't they raise an alarm and do something to at least stop the lynching/

where were the student union govt officials when the students were beaten and then burnt?

i am cock sure that some students who were witnesses and watching the whole thing with fascination will be amongst the rioters and people condemning the acts..

for me i will continue to say it that the fault lies with us as individuals first before we start blaming government, nigeria is the only country we have, and giving up on the country while transferring all the blame to govt is not only simplistic but moral cowardice on our part

The govt shouldn't be a reason for normal people to be a menace, murderers, heartless, filled with so much hate. The govt don't function and might not do anything about this evil. But!!!
