How I Was Molested By Uniform Men- Actress Dorothy Njemanze

The actress had an encounter with some men in man-o-war uniform few days ago in Abuja, and you just don't want to read her story. Lawless country where men in uniform are allowed to misbehave.

“On my way from the ambassador for peace beauty pageant held at the Sheraton Hotels, I decided to check on my brother at the end of my street. I parked my car in front of Dreams Garden at the end of my street behind one bus, and was going in to see Ugo (my brother) when a man dressed in a man-o-war uniform appeared from nowhere and shoved me on my breasts, commanding that I get into the bus I parked behind.

“I reprimanded him for touching my breasts but instead of apologizing, he continued to pushing me by my breasts towards the bus, so when I couldn’t bear it anymore I pushed him too and started running away. Please click to continue.
“Three men wearing man-o-war uniform and a head warmer, no name tags, and two plain clothes policemen ran after me. When they caught me they descended on me, beating me mercilessly despite the fact that I was screaming who I was.

“A girl who was waiting for me in my car, after waiting for a while and didn’t see me, came down to go and look for me at my brother’s place. She was horrified to see all those uniformed men assaulting me and trying to force me into the bus.

“She started pleading with them, telling them who I am and even showing them my car keys, but all to no avail. She started screaming when she thought they were going to kill me and that attracted people’s attention.

“When crowd gathered and people started recognizing me, there started coming to my rescue and there was almost a mob attack. A soldier out of fear cocked his gun and said he’ll shoot me if I don’t enter the bus.

“What hurts most is that I’ve been fighting against violence against women, and now I’m a first victim of it. I have over 70 cases of abused women on Abuja streets.

“The team that assaulted me tried to escape. I chased them down to area 10. Ugo found me there and another soldier cocked a gun, pointed at his tummy and threatened to shoot. A female soldier cocked her gun and pointed at Justina, the girl in my car, who was supposed to be on my show (ability talk, earlier in the day on love 104.5fm). Apparently the female soldier wanted to shoot Justina for having piercings on her face, because she said Justina was not a true Nigerian by that.

“Women have been randomly abducted and forced to confess to prostitutions by AEPB in conjunction with the questionable NGO, Society Against Prostitution and Child Labour.

“I have over 70 cases against them and now I’m a victim. Women are not safe in Abuja.

“The Military should be put to better use. It’s high time they pay for the damages they have been causing. I am so traumatized. Having cocked guns pointed at us is a mental image that tortures me.

“Government needs to hear us out, get facts and figures and stop the abuse against women. I wish the national assembly will permit me make a full presentation on the degree of this violence against women in Abuja and act immediately on it.

“I have rape victims, bullet injury victims, people beaten out of their jeeps at gunpoint whose names were published as prostitutes in national dailies, abused youth coppers… all sorts of traumatized victims. These people need rehabilitation at different levels urgently.”

Well, we hope the people in Government are reading this, because the worst kinds of violence are those against women and children.

  1. Seriously??? This has been going on in Abuja and we are just hearing about it? Who's covering up for these animals? Why are they somewhat untouchable? No woman(or anyone for that matter) deserves the kind of ill-treatment meted out on Miss Dorothy. I hope this case is pursued to a logical conclusion and the culprits brought to book!

    4. It is not about what you wear. I and a friend have also been harassed. Luckily for us we were saved by the crowd. And guess what we were wearing? Gowns well covered with pashmina veils. How about that? It beats me that we were taken for sexs workers. Its about the idiots the system put to work

    5. I wonder what happened to going undercover in the line of duty to actually separate the sex workers from the innocent female just out on the street. Everyday many innocent victims are picked and harassed by the AEPB officials. Some are even molested by the same officials. It is really a pathetic situation. It can happen to anyone so it isn't about what this victim was wearing.

  10. Anonymous 03 October, 2012 23:34, pray tell me where it is written in any constitution that one should be molested by armed uniformed men for "dressing naked". FYI, naked is naked, one isnt dressed at all when one is naked.

I was surprised to read this story, its alarming the excuses we give for our wrong doings. Was the soldier given authority to go out and arrest women who are "dressed naked?"

Ladun, your blogs coming up good to know. but this might be one of the reasons the right set of people do not read your blog. Illitrate, ignorant and half baked english graduates giving opinions out of their rear sides.

Uniformed men should be respected not feared. what do i tell my two year old, dont wear those shorts else soldiers will molest you?

    Good morning.

  11. This story sounds edited to suit the actress. How can you just pack your car and some uniformed men will ask you to get into their bus? Moreover, while the fracas was going on, they must have mentioned your crime.

I'm not excusing bullying by uniformed men but its always better if the victims paint the true picture

  12. let all our women dress decently, stop exposing urself to every man on d street, that's why all these things happen, d way u dress is d way u'll be addressed... violence against women indeed, start dressing modest like a SAME woman and everybody will respect u.by d way I AM A WOMAN.

    2. For the anonymous one above who claims that the story has been edited cos its is impossible for some one to appear from no where and command you to get into a vehicle I pray it never happens to anyone close to you cos its for real. My experience was just infront of medic care went to buy some drugs and as there was no where to park we had to park two blocks away from medic care. We had just left the car and we were walking towards medicare when some plain cloth man grabbed my arm saying let's go, I pulled back my arm shooting let's go where. It hadn't occurred to me that I was been mistaken for a seek worker. I was in my big veil that was almost sweeping the floor. My first thought was that I was been kidnapped, my friend who lives in abuja and already knew who they were,I heard her throwing insults at them. People gathered and were looking. Trust nigerians to enjoy free film show. It was some guys who were passing by that stopped to ask why we were been harassed. Well to cut the long story short we were not taken away. What would have been our faith had we gotten into their vehicle.

  16. And pressing the breast is part of the discipline? This Mrs Sam,maybe when it happens to ou in your fully covered gab or long skirt and church hat, then you will understand the crap that has been happening.it women like you that is grace womanhood

  17. women in abuja. cover ur body. abuja is not lagos. some women dress half naked in the name of fashion. with that being said, they should not molest or beat her. but even as a woman, when i see what some women wear, i feel like floggin them. it is highly uneccessary and inappropriate.

  18. Mrs Sam, I am sure you've got female kids. Imagine she's in secondary school and sneeks out(WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT) to attend a friends birthday party, she dressed in a mini denim skirt and a halter neck top. SHOULD THE SOLDIERS MOLEST AND MAN-HANDLE HER?

  19. A lot has been said. But actions are still very necessary

  20. Mrs. Sam, you are not a woman. You are an idiot!

  21. any lady staying in Abuja should be familiar with this kind of story. this agency drive around town with their cars harassing people even during the day. one does not have to be properly dressed to be their victim.once you are a lady and unlucky they grab and arrest you for hours, then you would be given a paper to pay any amount they deem fit. a lady who was arrested on her way from her sewing shop by 10pm and labelled a prostitute was given same treatment she got a lawyer afterwards and sued them. the court asked that she be compensated with 2million naira. she came to this popular hembelembe program on 104.5fm.its sad really. that agency should be scrapped because they don't have any job specification. i think its under AEPB.
