Opinions/Debate/Ideas: Should a compulsory three months paid maternity leave be granted to working moms?

YES: I agree that all working moms should have a compulsory three months paid maternity leave, because mothers need to spend as much time as possible with their newborns. Working moms should have three months paid leave, because I believe it is imperative that the mother spend as much time as possible with a newborn baby, to form the bond that will last their entire lives. Many other countries in the developed world provide this benefit for their employees, male and female. In some cases, the mother may not have physically recovered from the birth process before that time is up. Working mothers need at least that long to recover and bond with their babies, before returning to the workforce.

NO: I do not believe that three months of paid maternity leave should be granted to all working moms since they are committed to their jobs on terms that are separate from personal choices like pregnancy. Though I think having some maternity leave is important, I believe having three months of paid compulsory maternity leave is an excessive amount to expect businesses to pay. Such a stipulation would only bias companies against working mothers since they are already slowed down in the later terms of their pregnancy but are not working for less compensation during those times; to expect a business to also pay them for three months of leave when their pregnancy is a personal choice would only cause companies to put a hiring freeze on pregnant women.

What's your opinion?

    Please state the country!

In the UK; it's 9 months.

In the USA; 6 to 12 weeks i think.

You cannot get a general consensus on this due to different employment laws in different countries.

  9. This isn't even a debatable topic. It is the law (Nigerian Labour Act). So I don't see the reasy why its such an issue on this blog.

  10. Personally i will say 6months would be best for nursing moms, to enable them wean the baby properly. i for 1 knw that even that 6months is almost not even sufficient to fully devote to a new baby and a demanding hubby. but half a loaf of bread is said to be better than non

Just to clarify that in the UK you are entitled to 52 weeks. In my company it's nine months full pay and three months half pay. Most people come back after 9 months!

    1. Really, never heard of a company that does 9month full pay. Are u sure or telling stories . Abeg confirm what company is that

If u say 9month with most of it on d government 400 or so pound wages that is more believable. Never heard of 9month full pay

  25. 3 months with pay is fine, if u need extra time on your own, fine... But be rest assured u will not be paid. U didn't have the baby for the company, u had the baby for yourself therefore you should figure out a way to make things work and balance your life..... Baby needs mama! Company needs U! How do you expect to get paid when you ain't contributing to the company.....
All those dragging for one year maternity leave... Go open your own company and pay someone 4 one year when it's a no show then u will know how it feels... Maybe you r also paying a someone to cover the person on maternity leave as well (temp)

  27. you will get bored of mothering your child? i guess you need to have kids before spewing. the maternal instinct in you will not want to leave that child. if a company values you, let them pay.

  29. We're very quick to to say "in other countries" and condemn our own country without thorough research. Under the law that covers Nigerian Labour, there is provision for that. A mother is entitled to 3months paid leave. Her payment according to law is AT LEAST 50% of her monthly income, then upon resumption for the first 2months she closes work between the hours of 3pm - 4pm. Most companies pay full salary even though they are not under any obligation to do so.

In the UK, it is one year leave but only the first 6months is paid, and the remaining 6months is without pay, a mother can however decide to resume work any time within that 6month phase.
