Please read this to the last word.
Listening to some Nigerian radio stations can either leave
one permanently befuddled or just plain angry all the time. The latter is what
happens to me mostly, so I stopped listening to most radio stations for some
time. The television stations are not any better. The cause of one's linear
anguish is not hard to find. Confusing accents of the presenters! Yes, one
cannot really tell if the presenters on radio and television are from Miami,
Manchester or Mushin or if they are just a bunch of clueless upstarts mouthing
words which seem to make them happy but leaves the listener with a terrible
'earache'.
Tracing the history of radio and television presentation in Nigeria, who can ever forget the glorious days and diction of Soni Irabor, Jim Lawson Madueke, Bimbo Oloyede, Tony Abolo, Donald Everedjo, Sienne All-Well Brown, Ruth Benemesia Opia, Lola Alakija, John Momoh, Silver Oforgu and so many other articulate and fantastic presenters who shaped the entertainment industry with their style and panache of presentation?
What these names have in common is a clear and distinct presentation style with a pleasant-sounding smattering of perfect Queens English and intonations, mixed with the distinct mother-tongue of the personalities ( if you will) . These guys made millions of people shape up their articulation. We wanted to talk like them, to present like them, in the very clear and African-tinged intonations they had. We loved them and still do.
Being a former colony of Britain, it was only natural that our Spoken English as citizens of Nigeria, had to be a bit uppity and middle class even when many of us were of a lower rung in the society ladder. But that helped many people aspire to change their destinies in their chosen fields.
Sadly, in the mid-nineties, the sweeping American culture crept into our mainstream radio and things changed, albeit horribly. Before we knew it, the 'Yo, Yo, Yo!' presenters hit the airwaves. Sounding very American ( and most times Ghetto Americanese too) became the fad. So, the beautiful accents we have as Africans just disappeared with the 'dash monkey banana' borrowed accents.
Almost every Presenter came on air sounding like poor imitations of Hollywood Black Gangsters or rap artistes. These days, you just have to strain your ears to hear anything they say on air. Words like 'alright' has given way to 'aight!' and so many examples. It's not so much the fake accents that pisses me off but the lack of a true identity by these presenters! Some are confused and don't even know if the accent they speak with are American or British or just a horrible cacophony of both. All these 'gonna, wanna, burra, berra' Presenters! Una nor go kill person.
I have visited South Africa a few times and one of the things I like about their Presenters on radio and television is the NATURALNESS. The Black South African Presenters don't attempt to hide their MOTHER-TONGUE accents with the English Language. In fact, it makes them so distinct and wonderful on air. I like Supersports Presenters on DSTV from SA like Thomas Mlambo and even the Ivorian Football Analyst ( can't remember his name now). You feel so at ease with them.
You hear them. ( I must also commend Charles Anazodo and Praise and the female presenter on Supersports Nigeria. They are superb in their presentation). And that is not to say that we don't have presenters in Nigeria at present who are superb. We do have but they seem to be in a minority compared with the horde of fake- accented elephants who have assailed the Nigerian airwaves. Some of them have so perfected the art of 'forming' so well that they can't even pronounce Nigerian names at all on air!'Okoro Feeling Funky' jockeys! As Basket Mouth the comedian would say ,'Their Father!'

He's very right.
ReplyDeleteHe is very right my dear! Fake ass nigerians always tryin to speak foneh that cant fit their very nigerian mouths! why they cant stay original or employ fluent pipl i dont know!
DeleteOpen short post to c.novia: please make your rants short abeg. Whew!
DeleteI agree... What a pity.
DeleteSHAME on the Cool FM girl... she's never left Nigeria in her life... she even changed her name to K.... when we all know she grew up in that navy barracks and answers an igbo name.
AWWWW... Olodo...
My heart bleeds for them.
Totally agree with the man. Almost all of the fake presenters on 96.9 cool fm are guilty of this fake, forced accent of a thing.
DeleteI would recommend Wazobia to him tho.
Its dat omalicha of rhythm I totally can't stand n dat her hideously irritating laughter yuck! I love rhythm on a good day, but always change to other station once its her show.
DeleteCharles Novia is a jobless man! Of all d ills that befall nigerians on a daily basis, it is presenters on radio speaking with phonee is uppermost in his critique list?
DeleteThis man is wasted old school loser!
I totally agree with you Mr Charles, but have you listened to Wazobia fm? I just love wazobia anytime anyday. They are as real as anything! Especially Yaw, Nedu and Lolo.
DeleteNot just cool FM, what about the Beat 99.9
DeleteThis is so true!beat fm is guilty of this!sooooo fake!I can't stand it.99.9 pls do somthing fast abt ur oap's!there fakeness is so irritating!
DeleteBuhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaa Charles Novia ooo....lmao! Very true! www.kemifilani.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteIts soooo true! That's y I gv it to South African presenters all d way. They presents so naturally even wt thr local accents mixed wt good English diction. Most Nigerian presenters re American wonnabes.
DeleteI totally agree with him!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat about those ones on channels television,i usually can't wait till they're interviewing someone cos their listening to them speak is like pulling teeth. The likes of Maupe Ogun,Chamberlain n Suleiman Aledeh.Pls don't get me started on the saturday morning presenters,i just don't bother with that lot
DeleteU got it man!!!my exact thought, all spelt out...
ReplyDeleteAfter d Cacoophony of complaints by Charles Novia,he didn't even offer one simple solution to his perceived problems with these Americana presenters. I can tell Charles Novia that d only constant in life u mentioned is change! There r no absolutes in this world and if u don't like the current style of radio presentation, then tune off!
ReplyDeleteU had a write up the other day where u lambasted Tonto Dikek as a bad Actor, still she makes more money than ur sorry ass!
Name one spell binding movie u have producer Mr critisizer! U r beginning to sound like a broken record mr Novia and u better put up or suck a dick and shut d fuck up! Old school sissy!!!
don't get too rude. it's quite debasing.
DeleteI'm so sure u're a radio presenter. Idiot
DeleteI so much agree with him! I love listening to the radio when I'm driving instead of playing my CDs! For some reason, I prefer the song when it's played on air even if I have the CD. One thing that irritates me is the way the presenters talk, once the song is over and they start talking I just hiss and change to another radio station. The most irritating is some female on cool fm and another on the beat. I don't care about their names. I hate them soo much! That doesn't mean others are left out tho but urghhh I never listen to whatever info they have to pass on, my attitude is " bitch please" when you start speaking properly, we wud probably start listening to you. I'm sure they say crap sef*rme*
Deleteabeg
toolz you have started again, this is a new year.
Delete@truthhurts...i like ur style. but seriously, this person is a radio presenter. mercy of coolfm is the poster gal for this writeup.
DeleteI cant agree more o jare! Really its perfectly okay to attempt to speak great english and enunciate your words properly. However no be say to sound like you grew up in south london abi North london(Toke Makinwa!)
ReplyDeleteMake dem speak what we understand.
Hehehehehe
ReplyDeleteToke makinwa def
comes to mind, am
sure he's referring
to her and her dead
beat untraceable
accent. She shud
keep fooling herself
there. wannabe
lmao! fake fake fake!
Deleteshe speaks "brimericagirian" British plus america oh plus naija evn italian join sef..lol!
DeleteI totally agree. Case in point: Rhythm FM presenters and Cool FM!
ReplyDeleteThank you Charles Novia! That's exactly why I stopped listening to radio stations. The only station I listen to is WAZOBIA FM, at least they speak pidgin and we can all relate. Honestly these presenters get on my last nerves with their uncoordinated and fake accents! It's so irritating, disgusting...... Gosh!
ReplyDeleteWord Charles. This is quite true. Lets be real 9ja!
ReplyDeleteNa wa o 4 9ja.

IT IS REAL
The 'fake- accented elephant' is obviously Toolz. Ha ha! I agree with him.
ReplyDeletei love this dude.....he's so on point
ReplyDeleteCHARLES NOVIA I LOVE U FOR THIS......I DONT UNDERSTAND d reason most of dem speak like dat,BEAT FM....i lik gbemi and i hate, detest d way MARIA TALKS,it really irritates me,seriously, emmm TOOLS,hmmm, dont know wat to say,i stay in ENGLAND,AND I HAVE BIN HERE FOR 12 YERAS,and i still talk normally.....nigerian accent is soo cool,my friends here love it like crazy....
ReplyDeleteWho is deceiving this fob? 12years and you cannot speak with a british acc?? Mind you I don't mean forgetting your naija accent oo.. I mean 12 years is enough for one to have a britico/naija accent and learn to switch in different scenes.. Hmmnn you sure you been there for 12years??
DeleteSeriously?
DeleteYou must be Toke or that fake cool fm girl from the barracks
DeleteHe is right. I still speak normally. I even learnt how to speak pigin English here. Once u speak clearly and can pronounce the words right, the britico will understand
Delete@anon 18:09,yes I was in England for 12 years,I live there,I speak queens English wen I need to for presentation at work, but wen I don't nid to,I don't,I prefer my motherland tongue....everyone is not as fake as u,if I shud speak ,u wouldn't even hear me,British accent is different from American....If a British person speaks you,u mite find it hard to understand, not dis rubbish Nigerians speak,Tom dick and Harry speak ,even d ones dat haven't crossed Cotonou border....
DeleteSo you come back to contradict yourself??? I thought you speak with only naija acc? Mcheew 12years my nyash u mean 2
Deletenot everyone who lives in England has the privilege to speak queens english, i think it depends on where you live and the people you role with. If you only role with our Nigerian community, your accent will not change much and to say you've lived there for 12yrs and your accent is still the same. you pro'lly live in woolwich arsenal right opposite tasty restaurant...lol no disrespect. I only lived in England for 5 yrs and didnt even realize i had an accent until i got to the state en most people always pick where I'm from with my accent, It was then I knew i had an accent. So my dear mix more with oyibo's and you'll see d difference.
DeleteObviously u stay in those area u mentioned,so stayin in Rngland for 5years changed Ur accent, how fake can u b,I don't know all d places u talkin about...u must ave lived dere 4 u to know exactly wat is right opposite..mix more wit Oyiboss,u must b a clown, sure u were a security guard..
DeleteMy sis had bn in d uk for 20 yrs her accent is just like she came in yesterday, she lived all her 20 yrs in Essex which I believe is more oyinbo. I just don't get d unchanged accent
DeleteAll those fake Nigerians who never appreciate their own tongue/ accent. Unless you went to the uk as a baby, trust me you have no accent. You switch your accent to suit whomever you're speaking with. My niece who went to Canada at 5 years still has her NIG intonation, she just switches when she's in school or so. Yimu. The one talking about woolich arsenal so that one can say you've been to the uk shey? Nigerians sha!
DeleteAnon 23:41....'u are so on point,Nigerians are just too fake, staying in England for 5years and u fink u ave an accent......lmao..ok...I was there for 12yrs,I only change my accent wen I nid to....
DeleteLMAO! I am beginning to love this guy. Never a truer word has been spoken.
ReplyDeletewell said, Charles Novia just took the words out of my mouth as i just had this line of discussion with a colleague. Presenters and OAP's nowadays are more obsessed with being celebrities than improving on their acts and talents.
ReplyDeletePlenty annoying accents on air nowadays that leaves one wopndering if its an American or British accent.During the times of Sienne ,Ruth Opia and the likes, the pronunciation pattern accepted on air was the RP( Received Pronunciation) which isnt a contrived type of accent but a prim and proper manner of articulation( almost like the way the Queen will speak).
That is no longer the case, sometime i wonder if these OAP's left hot yams in their mouth or are eating hot roasted plaintain which might be burning their tongues and air passage.
To top it up, the nasal presenters with Toke Makinwa as their leader with this annoying type of voice which sounds like its cigerrate laden have also polluted everywhere.Gone are the days when tv and radio personalities had a soothing voice which was clear as air and no crazy accents to hide behind.
An overhaul is need NOW
P.S: some are doing a good job though...
My Two Cents or Kobo!!!
Gbam!!! I over-concur. Most especially when it comes to this celebrity issue, that's their main priority now o! Imagine N6 of Cool FM calling himself a celeb on air some weeks back. I just tire for these people. Its so strange, OAPs are now more interested in being seen on red carpets than anywhere else. Makes no sense to me at all.Anyways its not just OAPs, Nigeria as a whole is filled with wanna-bes. we all want to be something we're not. Sad really.
DeleteValerie.
PERFECTLYYYYYY PUTTTTTTTT. COULDN'T HAVE BEEN SAID BETTER
ReplyDeleteI totally agree wit him. Most of d tyms it is painful 2 listen 2 dem esp d 1s who r tryin so hard. Let's be proud of who we r.
ReplyDeleteSHIRT !!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI shall be back to read comment!
ReplyDeleteThis guy seems like an angry person. If he's not angry with Omotola he's angry on air personalities. Sort yourself out dude.
ReplyDeleteHAHAHA..WORD.........I hv heard all kinds of pronunciations of nigerian names by nigerians OAPs......very sad..we should be proud of our accents its unique.
ReplyDeleteGod bless u 4 this Charles. 4 once i agree wit u cos dis ppl are so irritating. i dont even listen to radio anymore seriously. everytin about dem is fake.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true...everything in Nigeria now is just taking the 'fake'American trend...musicians no longer sing natural songs based on Nigerian scenes, but prefer singing wayward-provoking songs filled with half-dressed ladies dancing around the musical videos like in the ancient wrestling of war and death!
ReplyDeleteToo bad how everything is falling into parts in Nigeria...sighssssss
Ngo babay! Focus on the issue on ground! This your holy holy attitude is starting to irritate me! I can give you d address of the lords chosen or deeper life website! So I will hear or see no evil!
DeleteLol,I tot I was the only one getting irritated by her Holier dan thou attitude, madam ngo did u catch ur husband wanking over cossy's picture?this one that you have decided to wage war on her and her Colleagues, pls take a chill pill.
DeleteLol,I tot I was the only one getting irritated by her Holier dan thou attitude, madam ngo did u catch ur husband wanking over cossy's picture?this one that you have decided to wage war on her and her Colleagues, pls take a chill pill.
DeleteThis is so true, unfortunately the trend is not only limited to presenters and newscasters. It is worse when you listen to actors and actresses when they speak english language with very poor diction. For good diction listen to Olu Jacobs, Joke Silva, Bimbo Akintola, Kalu Ikeagwu.
ReplyDeleteNot just OAPs and our local celebs oh! Everyone these days has one foreign accent or the other. Just last week, I stood beside a group of girls speaking in the normal nigerian accent, by the time they got to the lobby of Radisson Blu, they all mysteriously had british accents! I was so stunned! Most Nigs these days are fakers and pretensious people, so sad.
Deleteseconded Bimbo Akintola and Funlola Aofiyebi give me hope for our generation!!!!!!!!
DeleteStephanie okereke kills me too
Deleteso not just radio personalities
Ghanianas and South Africans are much more natural than us.
U're so right.....dese ppl speak so well n not fake
DeleteI relate well wif the radisson blue story. Jus ystdy, I went to have pizza wif one guy psykin me. We were speakin correct yoruba b4 we got there o. But d moment we entered Dominos like dis, I don't know where d fooneh came from. I had to be saying ehen ehen ehen. Nigerians are all fake mehn. Feel free n talk n stop formin rubbish.
DeleteI totally agree with Charles Novia. I've had this same conversation with my husband a thousand times over on our way to work. Its appalling how the whole essence of the broadcasting profession has been eroded by this need to sound foreign. It is indeed shameful. Not only are the radio shows so unstructured and without well thought through content, you even find presenters openly insulting and throwing jabs at callers. Not that one doesn't appreciate the new twist where some fun is injected into the radio programmes, however professionalism should still be maintained.
ReplyDeleteMy dear, thers no fun in what they do?they end up sounding dumb and unenlightened especially in serious issues
DeleteTru yarn o jawe...living fake live..SMH...
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. Its really worrisome that these guys think they are cool speaking like that but really end up stressing our auditory senses. I almost prefer to listen to Wazobia or Radio Lagos Yoruba these days. Just speak properly... No Phoney accents please. The only painful and regrettable fact with phoney accent is that once you start, you are under pressure the rest of your life to keep it up... Eeeya ... Poor Toke Makinwa, sometimes we really feel sorry for her when we listen to her speak. Like, I bet she is tired of the phoney, BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON... Look forward to hearing you 3 years from now.
ReplyDeletesomebody shout Cool FM
ReplyDeleteCoool fmmm baaabyyyy!!!!! aaa yaaa yaaa
DeleteWhile I think Charles is one man too full of himself, especially with the way he comes out not to critisize people but to tell them they are 'never do wells', I seem to agree with this piece. I still think you are seeking relevance tho as your days of little fame are gradually winding up.
ReplyDeleteI taya oo. Almost all the radio stations in abuja have their lorry load of presenters with untraceable. They are all so annoying with their horrible pronounciation of words. Its like a criteria to be a presenter these days. Wazobia dey try shaa.
ReplyDeleteTheres one Omo London on Cool FM, I could totally strangle her.
ReplyDeleteRotflol
DeleteRotflol
Deletelmao I feel you bro
ReplyDeletelaviva da viva creeps me out or whatever shes called
and one sports presenter that goes man-yur(manchester united )
sigh.
Laviva is liberian she's bound to sound american
DeleteLaviva on rythm Fm abuja accent is sooooooo fake, its almost impossible 2 understand her sef,n u can tell she is struggling 2keep up with d 'phoney' abeegggi jst speak normal jor.my husband hz stayed in london 4 like 4eva bt he stil speaks normal naija english,so I tire 4 all dis dem Vina, matilda, kiki n co kind of English 4 abuja radio stations.
DeleteMay this guy make heaven, simply for this write up.i mean, where did he not cover?is it their bad diction?their senseless forming?their thirst for celebrity life?their general fake ness and boring tales?i mean!he said it all.you can't now put on ur radio set without being hit by a wave of irritation.i sometimes cringe when I listen.a total disgrace.98 percent do this thing.all you hear is "go on Hun"...."I'm with u darl"trashy talk.and the night presenters,do they really think their voices are so romantic.they literarily moan all over the radio.even the gospel presenters can't be real.
ReplyDeleteThis is a reflection of the deteriorating nature of our society.people no longer pursue real and genuine goals but chase after superficial things.shadows.and these OAPs are corrupting our young generation.they no longer wish to speak good English or articulate properly.seems far fetched but listen to these shows and hear how young children call in to admire their voices and personality.tommorow, they copy.no standard at all.Wole Soyinka,a literary genius, yet you hear him speak in an admirable manner.
Don't point at tools or toke alone.they are almost all the same.all.even the shameless men among them who you will think should know better.all fakers.and more faceless members of their stock are arising.sincerely,it is an SOS situation.its so bad to me that I almost see it as immoral.
All started with Dan Foster and the true fan base he gained with his real American accent.he later started being used for radio adverts and the competitors snapped!bringing in all sorts of hideous voices in the name of foreign.sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's shameful but generally crass.one was on radio saying 'the Nigerian language is diminishing.ibo yoruba"seriously lamenting.one guy called in,she pronounced his name as 'Emrekar' in one shameful accent.who d heck can't say 'emeka' in 9ja?even the way she was pronouncing her own name was downright cringe worthy.
So,we who need to start a day right driving down to work in d morning, have to abscond from their early morning shows and radio in general......lthis guy ain't a hater,he is so right in this.....me myself, pardon my out pouring, this dude just took the words right out of my mouth.like someone jus read my nagging thoughts and put it to writing
On point. Thank you. I have to look out my car window to check its not snowing when I listen to the radio na wah o!!!!
ReplyDeleteLoooooooooooooolest
DeleteAs in Gbammmest!!!!
DeleteThere is this girl on Smooth FM in the mornings.. Sope or something.. LORD!!! Why soooo fake? Pls we need to get that girl of the airwaves.. I automatically change stations when she starts her strange nasal sounds. All the other guys on Smooth are great!!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you for this Mr. Novia. You have said it all and very well too. i tell my friends that the first (and probably the only) criteria for working on radio is a foreign accent. doesnt seem to matter where its from, it should sha make u sound exotic. some of these stupid LAFAs (thats locally acquired foreign accents) as so ridiculous and irritating, listening to the radio really is a turn off. case in point Toke Makinwa from Rythmj 93.7 and Maria from Beat 99.9. both of their accents are so fucking irritating its amazing. i know Toke schooled all her life in this country so where the hell did she get the accent from? As for Maria im still trying to decipher what nationality her accent is. truly, radio these days is just dead. thank God for CD players!
ReplyDeletei concur....Their Father...hahahaha
ReplyDeleteOne name comes to my mind: TOKE MAKINWA!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe original Beebee....
Ohhhh he couldn't have said it any better. I moved to Nigeria temporarily 4months ago from UK. I tell you the first time I listened to the radio was nauseating!.Silly American and British accents everywhere and the funny thing is, you know they try wayyy to hard, still they can NEVER get some pronounciation right! I never listen to any radio station. Fake ass accents EVERYWHERE. Desmond Elliot made a fool of himself a while ago on TV, he was saying something about Twitter, the fool pronounced it right firstly! next thing the airhead said sorry I mean 'twira'(American Accent). What a right Plunker. *rme*
ReplyDeleteYeah
DeleteThey're all pl
An interesting read. I will not blame the presenters, I will blame their producers. I think speaking with an accent may be a prerequisite before going on air. For this culture to change, it has to come from the top.
ReplyDeleteits true u are right ......its the producers not the presenters that need to be rebuked
DeleteNo.. Its the public. STOP listening to their station and they will adjust sharp sharp.
DeleteShe Oma Gee is right actually. Anon 20:51 how exactly do you change the "large" public's choice of who to listen to? You cannot. If their producers are fine with it do you think they care?
DeleteWhen people like Bimbo Oloyede reads the news on channels i love it..... She speaks well and when its time to pronounce Nigerian names she does it perfectly........for example...She doesn't pronounce "akwa ibom" from her nose she probably researched and says it fluently and effortlessly
ReplyDeleteTrue talk, I get irritated wen I listen 2 radio and al dis fake accent pple speak even if am bored I can't stand their fakeness.
ReplyDeleteYeh yeh yeh!!! is your boy m to tha u to tha m to tha u! I wanna talk about sumfin! Yeah? Relationships innit? Its cray! Am like whaaa! Splonkers! Shi holmes! Follow me on twihher! U won't forgerrit! Yo peace out! This is what I hear every evening! All becos I want to win goody bag!
ReplyDelete@Dr van bay u don leave LIB come here again...u sef wan win goody bag?forgirabourit...lol

DeleteTwihher! Loooooooooool!
DeleteHas he listened to Wazobia FM?
ReplyDeleteTrue talk....we need more people like charles novia in dis country.UNDISPUTED
ReplyDeleteDan Foster wannabes
ReplyDeleteThank God for Wana Wana.
ReplyDeleteIt is ironic that while she schooled and lived in the UK for years, Toke Makinwa merely spent weeks on holidays.
God Dey.
The fakest of the untraceable fakers is suga suga of love fm abuja. He is so annoying i almost injured myself once because of him. Have stop listening to them to save my life
ReplyDeleteJoyce and Dotun of Cool fm. These two can make me go crazy!!! Jesu. The accents they put up is sooooo disgusting. I stopped listening to cool fm becos of them 2
ReplyDeleteMy brothers and sisters, one day I decided to listen to radio o I think cool fm, it was a call in show one girl called oh and was forming phonetics, the presenter was angry and embrassed the girl on radio by asking her if she had ever travelled abroad, but my dear people if you hear the ( Swedish, Scottish, British, jamican) accent his presenter was using herself uwud run under covers. I was trying to call that day let me insult her with my britsh accent oloshi!. People if u want to listen to radio please tune to wazobia! Listen to office palaver in the morning on ur way to work, make the totori ur ears with sweet pidgin maybe when the rating 4 cool and beats fm go down they would adjust. Correct pronunciation Is what we want to hear not phoney accents
ReplyDeleteLol@ wanna, burra, gonna presenters. Too much of everythin is bad,d way some Of them take it to d extreme is so not good.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with Charles Novia. Excellent write-up!
ReplyDeleteHis correct especially cool FM nd dat girl called joyce dats y I like to listen to WAZOBIA
ReplyDeleteHaaa. Have we forgotten the queen lady general of fake accents? Ashionye!!!!! Omo Ashionye has the worlds fakest most disgusting most irritating accent ever. Thank God I don't hear anything abt her anymore. I guess she passed the baton to Joyce of coolfm and Toke makinwa. But that Joyce coolfm sha...I swear that babe must be straffing someone to still be working in coolfm becos me no fit understand how such a disgor accent can still be allowed on air till date. Coolfm fire Joyce! Save ur radio station. And while u r at it, fire Dotun too.
ReplyDeleteHaaaaaahaaaahaaaa Ashionye's accent till 2day I can't decipher. Did she not have family and true friends dat told her how she constantly made a fool of herself with that deep nasal bull she calls accent?
Deletehey pakistani or rwanda beauty or watever u call urself... dont say trash abt joyce, she might have a fake accent but she's one of the best oap we have around.
DeleteCharles your so right, know ur referring 2 Olisa Adibua,he's so so fake. Don't listen to 99.9 fm if he is on air
ReplyDeleteOlisa speaks proper n never with a fake accent. I'm not a fan of his cos of his antecedents but I must say the truth. Now who has heard fade ogunro of beat fm. She's the S.I unit of fake accents
DeleteOlisa's fake accent has become so real over the years that it's now real. I know people like that, they have made the fake now perfect.
Deleteabeg, help me ask am if lastma wan tow im car weda e go dey plead im case with dat accent. fake ass mofo!
DeleteD comment hia really got ♍ε̲̣̣̣̥ throwing my phone away! I tot I was d only one who noticed those fake accents. Iv stopped listening to radio here in d east. Pls u guys need to check out hot fm hia in owerri. U gonna puke @ the igbotic cum britico, cum americo accents
ReplyDelete@strfrmdahip says said..
ReplyDeleteOnly just got back from a visit to 9ja and listening to the radio..what really pissed me off was the fact that most were acting like they couldn't pronouce 9ja names u know all acting like a Oyinbo person would pronouce a 9ja name..is this meant to make them sort of elevated or what??..what a dumb move..
How they get this jobs is beyond me..fake azz!!..u now in 9ja..conform or move the HELL on!!
the funny one is when they are speaking britico and all of a sudden one deep ibo accent sleeps in. Chai be real guys from the UK no be reason they speak yoruba in london and some places are worse off to lag get real
ReplyDeleteVALERIE on Cool Fm is the only OAP that sounds natural.
ReplyDeleteThe producers are to blame for this. A friend of mine, an Igbo girl who finished with a good degree in Mass Communications from UNN with recognition awards from the university, local government and even NYSC was turned down at BEAT FM cos she doesn't have a foreign accent (either fake or original) and its not like my friend has igbo accent o. They are more concerned about the accent than the quality of content or wealth of knowledge these presenters bring on. Such a shame.
That's not true. Valerie is not the only real person on Coolfm. Maksy is a darling and a half! She sounds so real and down to earth. And even tho her show is at nite, I swear down...I stay up listening to her. I love Maksy, her show is the bestest and realest on coolfm followed by N6. They both keep it real.
DeleteAs for Joyce and Dotun...they both shud be electrocuted cos I swear they both must be FUCKING someone in Coolfm to keep their jobs
Hahaha, you have a point there Simbi. There are still some real OAPs out there.I love N6 too and there is WILDCHILD on Rhythm FM too.
DeleteI saw Dotun at a Cool FM show at Eko hotel in Dec 12. The Cool FM supremo was sitting right in front of me, and The Dotun guy was just all over him: "can i get u a drink sir?, are u comfortable sir? can i carry one leg for u sir...."
DeleteI swear the guy must be d biggest kiss-ass in the world that's probably why he still has a job there!
its everly so disgusting to listen to them fakes......smh for dem all
ReplyDeleteGod bless this man!
ReplyDeleteSeriously I think mercy ajisafe of cool fm shld read this and change her fake accent. Abeg na naija we dey and most of ds peepz were not even born abroad.she can't even call "ketu" she pronounced it lik "kettle". Fake ass british wannabe agbero girl
ReplyDeleteI think u should get ur facts right before u come here and start talking shit. I know her and she lived in london for 17yrs and she has a british passport too. Why are u sooo bitter? Did u apply for a job at cool fm and they rejected you?
DeleteToke Makinwa is just too FAKE ABEG!!!!!! All the words in Toke's dictionary always ends with "S". She is the worst Female OAP in my opinion. I wonder which criteria they used in recruiting her self, FAKE ACCENT!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYOU ALL SHOULD STOP LISTENING TO THOSE RUBBISH STATIONS. TUNE INTO WAZOBIA.. Proud To Be Nigerian. 9JA 4 LIFE.
ReplyDeleteCharles Novia has stolen his 15minutes of fame, but a professional critique like Charles Novia who claims to be a movie director with no directorial accompliShment points to a case of serious low esteem issues on this man!
ReplyDeleteHe puts down others to feel good. So as u praise his write up,read btw d lines.
Oh SHUT UP! Go and finish your fake ijebu garri...
DeleteHave you wondered why the Nigerian public completely agree with him? Is this his first write up?
Olodo... Oshisko...
Go back to school and re-educate yourself.
The public are the reason why those radio station operates so its in thei best interest to listen to the public's opinion...
OLODO!!!! If you work for Cool FM and Rhythm or whatever... u better resign and apply to WAZOBIA cos u guys are losing listeners everyday... MUMU :)
You read between the lines.. OLODO
DeleteI tackled mercy ajisafe two weeks ago on this matter.I told her on twitter, dat she wasn't communicating with us(the listeners).pple on twitter den looked at me like I was insane.I was so disappointed.Mercy actually said "she is a briton" dats why she cant pronounce "ketu"..wat a pity.the painful part is dat, doze fake assents are the major criterias for gettin radio jobs in 9ja.am glad charles has brought this to the open.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine called me the same day he arrived into the country (USA). This was his first trip out of Nigeria. I was so excited to hear him on the phone, so I started speaking with my naija accent. But for some reason, he started speaking this fake American accent, ending every statement with "na mean, nam saying , etc) I have been in the USA since I was 10, now 26 but the guy tried sounding more American than me. In my mind I was like, so his accent changed less than 6 hours of his arrival to d USA. Na wa ooo!
ReplyDeleteI called Cool F.M to complain about this issue in 2007 but it was not addressed and that's why i never listen to Radio. Anyone remember a guy called Momoh Kobanji...can't even spell it correctly because he never pronounced his own Naija na me correctly. We breed a nation of self haters and terrible mimics. Brazilian hair is another headache topic for another day.
ReplyDeleteOh no Momoh Kobanji is REAL. He speaks well. Good diction. I love him. I used to listen to him on Radio Continental in the mornings back then and his show Kobanji Direct.
DeletePlease what is OAP?
ReplyDeleteIt means On Air Personality
DeleteOld Aged Pensioner lolz
Delete@ anon 02:39 OAP mean ON AIR PERSONAL. Tnk me later.
ReplyDeleteHmm..Do u mean "On Air Personality" @ Anon 7.41?
DeleteU too dey Puma....
The original Beebee...
Nigerians r d most guilible fOols ever! Charles Novia has written what has been bothering u for yrs,no changes has ever been made and u fools r hailing him for writing d obvious?
ReplyDeleteSo what difference will his mad man ranting make? Will it stop d fake accents? Hell No! Is speaking with an accent a prerequisite for hiring new presenters? Hell Yeah!
Y'll r big fools cos ur comments don't mean shit to those who hire the presenters and what there r asking ur silly asses to do is to put up or shut up! U have no choice stupid black monkeys with ur bush accents! Suck ma dick scums!!
such uncivilized language. Dotun maybe?
Deletewhoever you are i cant help but sympathize with you..you must have an IQ lower than room temp to write this rubbish, it baffles me hw you agree the issue has been bothering you and still berates somebody that wrote about it. one more thing i suggest you get clinical or psychological help for your very low self esteem cos you stupidly think that a foreign accent is a big deal.
DeleteToolz toolz toolz
ReplyDeleteMr Novia is soooooooo on point n i pray our generatn make a u-turn. Radio Nigeria still rocks n leads d pack cos dy insist u get it right n r neva impressed wit fake accents. Their training school is still d best wit Effetie n co.
ReplyDelete@ anon 7.41.u didnt get it right.OAP means ON AIR PERSONALITY.u r welcome
ReplyDeleteThe news presenters on Channels Tv are an exception especially Toyin Ibitoye who presents sports. His English is articulate with good pronunciation in his Nigerian accent! He has never 'gbagauned"! Chamberlain is also good with his diction. Unfortunately Suleiman Aledeh and MAupe Ogun seem to switch Accents, they need to be more natural!!!
ReplyDeleteIst of all some of you here are just outright Haters or very ignorant humans.... You cannot detect a fake accent from a real one. On the case of Mercy Ajisafe she was born in the UK, came to nigeria for a bit, visited a couple of times after that and she hadn't been to nigeria in the last 18years before she started the coolfm job last year.. How is she meant make the accent go away? So she cannot get a job she like and loves doing because she's a nigerian with a british accent? Or because you low life jobless critics earn a living of running people down? Well guess what? You will stay here and run your gutter tongues and her accent will not change so the earlier you break every source of oral information in your life, the earlier you gain you peace... Because soon you'll see her on you TV screens, on you computers and everywhere you go... She is so young she's not stopping soon
ReplyDeleteYou with Nigerian accent,go and apply to any radio station in the u and see if you'll get a job.the point of radio is communication.an if it's not happening, then there's a problem
DeleteLol... Truth by Nita is def the Mercy babe. Aunty Mercy Ajisafe welcome o! Ekabo. Thank u for stopping by and announcing ur plans to go on TV. Ur accent is horrendous. Take it or leave it. Gba be
Delete.
ReplyDeleteSome of you here are just Outright haters or Jobless ignorant critics who cannot tell a fake accent from a real one. Now on the case of Mercy Ajisafe she was born in the UK, lived in the UK visited nigeria on occassions and hadn't been to nigeria in 18years until she last year when she visited and decided to move back to nigeria and started working at cool Fm, How is she meant to make the accent go away? So now she cannot do a job she likes and loves doing because she is a nigerian with british accent?Or because you Jobless critics have refused to cross the shores of your state? Well guess what? The earlier you break or burn every form of oral information in your house the earlier you gain your peace because soon you will see her on your TV's, or On computers and everywhere u go. She is too young to stop soon.
ReplyDeleteCool fm's dotun is the wackest of them all!
ReplyDeleteThis charles guy is a jobless fuck and should go and get a proper regular job. Ranting about radio personalities like an 18yr old. Get a life bro or should i say "bros" cuz u look old as fuck
ReplyDeleteIF YOU THINK YOU ARE BETTER GO AND APPLY FOR A JOB OR START YOUR OWN RADIO STATION AND SPEAK THE WAY YOU WANT. OR TUNE TO WAZOBIA .....WHEN YOUR CHILDREN START SPEAKING 'WE DEY GO, WE DEY COME' YOU WILL BE THE SAME PEOPLE TO COME ON BLOGS AND COMPLAIN
ReplyDeleteah CNovia u forgot to mention late Tokunbo Ajayi, her impeccable English was 2nd to none and of course our own Abike Dabiri, she was so good wt Newsline

ReplyDeleteI have been waiting for somebody to mention that Fade chick of beat fm...she is really the SI unit, another thing that kills me is the Convo, why cant OAP hold reasonable and interesting convo, its always some lame and ridiculous bs they are going about thinking its interesting
ReplyDeleteMr Novia is so right. D last time I listened to them cool fm and co was abt 2yrs ago. Now I only tune in to Radio Lagos Yoruba and Wazobi. Good riddance.
ReplyDeleteNo tym ..
ReplyDeleteReading through all these comments I see everybody is concerned about radio and tv, accents and pronouncatons! I wonder if you all (those with kids) will be able to help you children with their english homework because your spellings too are terrble!
ReplyDeleteI'll call you out;
Deletepronouncatons?
you children?
Headshrinka is also spelt incorrectly. You have to be 100% sure before you correct someone. Don't tell me these are typos, I know the difference.
I have no views about Charles Novia and OAPs. When I'm in Nigeria, I listen to music in my car or Wazobia. All I can say is that this phenomenon didn't start today. Some of you may be too young to remember.
it was Dan Foster that started the whole shit. thank God for wazobia and cd player.
DeleteIt started way before Dan Foster.
