Photos: 17-Year-Old Gives Birth to Conjoined Twins in Nasarawa

On Thursday, a 17-year -old woman, Safiya Sani, was delivered of conjoined twins at the Mararaba Medical Centre, Mararaba Gurkuin, Nasarawa State.

Dr. Angela Smart the medical superintendent of the health centre during an interview with newsmen revealed that the woman was referred to the hospital at 10am on Thursday from Mararaba Primary Health Centre when they were not able to deliver her of the babies.

She said: “While we were taking the delivery, we discovered that she could not do so through her virginal so we took her to the theatre and that was where we discovered that the babies were joined.”

Smart stated that the woman came with a scan result indicating that she was carrying a set of twins, which also indicated that the babies were coming with legs but could not pick that they were conjoined.

Dr. Smart said the babies were however, referred to the National Hospital since there are no facilities at her hospital to separate the babies.

She used the medium to appeal to all pregnant women to adhere strictly to directive given to them during antenatal and to ensure that they attend antenatal regularly and early as well as taking their drugs especially the folic acid. “Most of these women joke with those drugs,” she said.

While speaking with some journalists, Mrs. Sani said that she registered at Mararaba Primary Health Centre when her pregnancy was five months old. She added that she neither anticipated having conjoined twins nor having any complications at birth.

Safiya, a seamstress, said her husband, Sani Ahmed, is an Arabic teacher in one of the mosques in Mararaba. She appealed to the federal and state governments and well-meaning Nigerians for help to save the lives of the babies.

  2. Why is this 17 year old being referred to throughout the article as a "woman"?!!! The whole thing is so poorly written-"Virginal", "...coming with legs", "could not pick..."
As with pretty much everything in Nigeria, journalism has gone to the dogs.

  4. Dumb doctor advice, taking folic acid does not prevent having twins tht are conjoined. The split of an egg occurs 12days after conception if it happens after the 12th day, the risk of the twins being conjoined is very high! How many woman know they are pregnant at 2-3 weeks so prenatal care or folic acid doesn't come until after they have confirmed pregnancy which is 4-6weeks by then ur twins were already conjoined!

    1. that is why doctors recommend you start taking folic acid 3 months to when you hope to conceive or if you are sexually active.....

Thank u o! Some people under estimate the use of foilc acid. Once u know u want to start a family just start taking folic acid. It is good for the Baby and u.

    4. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before and during pregnancy, it can help prevent some major birth defects of the baby’s brain, known as anencephaly, and spine, known as spina bifida.
Anencephaly is a serious birth defect in which parts of the baby’s brain and skull do not form correctly. Babies born with anencephaly cannot survive.while spina bifida is malformation of d spine.

Dr Tom frieden ,Centre for Disease Control(US)

Folic acid cannot prevent cojoinning of twins ,it is an act of nature which science cannot explain or prevent for now
